The domed bottom, lathe turned with a base ring which required that the horn be shaped with heat to engage the perfectly circular base, rather than the base shaped to match the oval section of the horn. The base secured by wood pins. Iron staples to the base and spout for suspension from a bag or shoulder strap. Riflemen owned several horns to accommodate coarse and fine grain, for charge and pan respectively. They also carried two or more smaller horns in case one got wet. This is a fine example of a medium sized horn, of the type referred to as a combination horn, which could have carried powder of various grades in different circumstances.
