Exceedingly rare example in untouched condition. 45 ¾” overall. The wood body elegantly formed with curved shaft, scroll form grip and thick clover form bit with forged iron sheathing providing the working edge. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, p.269 where he shows three remnant metal bit edges, none with any wood remaining. He states that these are more readily dated to the French and Indian Wars (1754-63) than the Revolution. We found references to two examples but no pictures of a complete example as here. Truly belongs in a museum!
