From the Sir Cecil Armitage Collection, assembled before 1920. Bronze, about 1” overall, formed as a coiled snake with bulging eyes. These represented Ashanti proverbs, and were used in the slave trade to measure gold dust. Armitage ended a military and diplomatic career in Africa as the first President of Gambia. We purchased the majority of his collection when sold separately by his two nephews in the 1980’s. Many, purchased from us have been reproduced and are now sold in museum gift shops.
