Forged iron, 8” length with elongated leaf shaped wedge section blade. The base squared for flush seating in a cast bronze handle. The tang of exceptional length suggesting that it was gripped in both hands. Animal sacrifice was central to Roman pagan religion. Goats, sheep, pigs and others were meticulously prepared for the offering then killed by slashing their throats. The entrails were examined for omens (like reading tea leaves) and if favorable, the animal was cooked and eaten.  Excellent excavated condition with some original surface on the blade. On Plexiglas display stand with certificate of authenticity.
