Baluster medial and brass encased pivot with fancy pierced hexagonal segment below. This is a fighting knife with thin slashing blade which would not be suitable as a work knife. Generally, sailors were allowed only blunted knives to minimize fights and mutiny. Pirates carried fighting knives of which this is a fine example.
