Early 20th century. Forged iron, 19 ¾” length, squared base leaf shaped, with medial ridge scored with alternating hash marks, flanked by forged iron segments. Hexagonal section butted seam socket with thickened base. pierced for a securing pin, though it’s likely that this example was never intended for mounting. The socket with forged finish, deeply incised with bands forming chevrons. The root with trade brass wire wrap. A gift or display of wealth and power by a clan head. One of just two we have ever offered.  Nb: Despite their proximity to the Arab slave trade, the Maasai did not participate in it. Nor were they predated upon to supply slaves.
