Bronze, with 3” octagonal barrel and linear extension mounted with the hammer and mainspring. A block forward of the breach mounts a pivoted lever. The foot of the lever is notched and engages a small stick or wood pin, the opposite end of which holds the hammer at “cock.” There is no other mechanism. Moving the lever, as by stepping on it, dislodges the stick, firing the charge. Ingeniously simple and, as these were used outdoors, through the weather, often for years, eminently reliable. A mechanized lock simply would not survive those conditions. The side marked GOYNE (unrecorded by Winant), which name is identified as English and Irish. Intriguing.
