This sword dates to the early Victorian Period or earlier. It is a forgery, made to deceive a wealthy collector at the time. It is faithfully reproduced in form with fine 31 ½” hand hammered blade. The giveaway, which is well known to experienced collectors, is that it was made from an etched image in a book before photographic reproduction. Despite his meticulous attention to detail, the maker had no side view and made the guard and pommel thicker than an original. Of course, the purchaser relied on the same level of information and undoubtedly, it was regarded as a true Viking treasure, probably well into the 20th century. A remarkable example with a history of its own. It is a fine credible substitute for the five figure original.
