90 ¾” length. Iron head with crescent form axe supported by a griffin with spread wings and long tail. The back fluke is modeled as a griffin with raised wings. Both, and the connecting socket decorated in punch work. Tapered octagonal socket with a rein hook and diamond section fore spike. Fine octagonal wood haft with iron stud decoration top and bottom. The butt worn from exposure to the damp stone floor. Wonderful age patina throughout. Dating to the late 18th century European wars including the War of Spanish Succession, these saw service through the French and Indian War and Revolution.
