Large lethal proportions with 22 1/8" broad d.e. blade decorated with rococo motifs of veils and flowing stylized foliage. Iron hilt with rudimentary shell guard filed with a star burst (edge with small lamination flaw). Straight cross guard with matching star burst medial and file beaded quillons. Oval base ferrule and pommel cap. One piece bone grip with reeded panel with diamond band medial and roped top. Grip with two cracks and small chip to the back, shown fine patina. Hilt and blade with crisp bright finish over fine matrix of black oxidation speckles. Referred to as hunting swords, this example with no reference to hunting or game in its decoration, was clearly produced as a civilian side arm and a type widely carried in Colonial America.
