Pattern which served in the American Revolution and probably the French and Indian War. See Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, 62.S where Neumann states that the pattern was adopted in 1767 but known to have been in use earlier. He identifies it as a grenadier’s sword. Grenadiers were elite infantry selected for size, strength and skill. They were used for special assignments like sieges and dangerous attacks. Brass hilt made in one piece with stirrup form knuckle bow, ribbed grip and hooded pommel with tall button. 28 1/2” curved wedge section blade with narrow back fuller. Excellent with good uniform age character throughout.
