This is a good example of one of the many variations of English hangers used primarily by infantry, which transitioned from the so called 1742 pattern with thick rolled edge guards to the “1751” pattern with unreinforced edge guard and side bars. Neumann illustrates many examples as 11.S -22.S in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution. This example most closely accords with #16.S with heart shaped guard and spirally fluted grip. The 27 3/8” back fullered blade is typical of most hangers of the period. Acquired on Cape Cod in the 1960’s, it is in typical condition for New England finds.
