Napoleonic period or just after. Iron hilt with 5 ball knuckle bow and large 5 ball side loop enclosing a bronze fully modeled lion clutching the shield of Bavaria. Cushion from iron pommel. Diced ebony grip with reeded band brass ferrules. 31" broad fullered straight spadroon form blade with minor scratches to the ricasso, mostly bright with a few shallow edge nicks. Hilt crisp and bright with minor smooth speckles. Grip worn from use and single check each side. Bavaria was made a kingdom in 1806 when Napoleon abolished the Holy Roman Empire. This sword was likely made about that time as the use of the cushion pommel, lost popularity soon thereafter. The blade form was popular from about 1770 and the five ball design is generally dated to about 1810 and after. This is the example of that design we have seen in steel and the only sword of this type we have encountered.
