Anglo-Sudanese War period (1885-90s) and evidently a trophy of that war returned by a British officer. 36 ¼” length, wood. The haft finely shaped by scraping, not sanding. Domed top conical head, very delicately incised in a line matrix. Each line produced by a series of tiny dimples. The butt with black inked WEIRCOM 89 (?) and a green inked paper label Righer C-3. Wonderful quality and patina. Small old smudge of “manor house white paint” which occurred as the ceilings of England’s fine houses were painted frequently to brighten over candle and oil staining without removing the wall hangings.
