The Hadendoa were deemed by the British to be the fiercest warriors which they had faced. They were made famous by Kipling's poem Fuzzy Wuzzy, (a name given by the British in reference to their teased hair arrangements), in which they broke the infantry square at Tamai in 1884, and captured two machine guns. The voluminous hair was teased up with, then mounted with a comb identifying the owner's clan. 10 1/2" with three tapered tines. The upper divided into panels delicately incised in bands of diamonds, hounds tooth and hatches. Excellent with good patina.
