Zulu War booty, captured by a British soldier at the Battle of Nodwengu, the haft carved Nodwengo, 1879, with a series of hatch marks, undoubtedly tallies representing the weeks of his service. Nodwengo was the last battle of the 1879 Zulu War, a clean-up campaign following the British victory at Ulundi. Note that while present literature "corrects" to Nodwengu, original accounts use the early spelling as displayed on the spear haft. Length, 50 1/8". Identified battle captured assegais are exceedingly rare, possibly unique to this example.
