Fine example of traditional construction. Forged iron head, 13 1/4" length of traditional profile, with forged lamination to the base and mottled dark patina. Heavy hardwood haft, tapered through its length. The socket with short bronze ferrule. The upper haft with a carved step serving as a lock for the split cane basket weave sheathing which encased the upper haft and metal spear bolster for an extremely tight joint as the wet cane dried and shrunk. The wrap now partially lacking. Ex Gen. Harry Bandholtz Collection which won first prize at the 1905 St. Louis Exposition.
