IMPERIAL GERMAN OFFICER’S SWORD, LATE 19TH CENTURY

Brass hilt with wire wrapped ray skin grip. 28 3/8” curved broad fullered blade. The back with crisp maker’s inscription M NUEMANN HOFLIEFERANT BERLIN. Hoflieferant signifies a royal appointment. Thus this maker was a supplier of swords to the Royal household, much as in the tradition of English Royal Appointments. The mark is an endorsement of finest quality.
