Central Mindanao where Bagobo is spoken and that designation sometimes applied to these shields. 27 3/8” height. Elegantly carved from a single piece of wood (mahogany?) with applied cross brace. The ends and middle expanded with cusped edges between. The top with a rectangular crest and characteristic cylindrical boss below center. Reverse with integral hand grip expanding to a stiffener. The front well decorated in a variety of bands of geometric figures, painted and scorch colored in good contrast. The edges inset with spaced clusters of red and yellow hair tufts. Expected wear and a splinter to the cross brace. Good early example of these, any of which are quite scarce.
