Byzantine, 6th-7th century. Used by pilgrims to bring blessed water or oil from the tomb of Saint Manas who was martyred about 295 AD and buried in the Egyptian desert. 3 5/8" height. Each side relief decorated with a figure of the saint between two camels (who carried his body and identified his burial place) with crosses above. Examples of Saint Manas flasks are in the major museums of the world. Mold made terracotta with good detail throughout.
