EARLY CHRISTIAN OIL LAMP, 5TH-6TH CENTURY AD

Called in recent terminology, Byzantine, but the people of the period called themselves Roman, even after the fall of Rome. A rare buff terra cotta lamp, 3 1/8” (3.06”) length, of typical form with tendril decoration to the sides and double raised bands around the raised edge filler. The bottom with raised circular foot. Constantine recognized Christianity in 313 AD and it became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 AD. This lamp, then served during that period when Christianity was the major religion in the Roman Empire. Together with a Roman green glass shard  of the period.
