VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, 10th- 11th CENTURY

10th- 11th century. Just over ¾” (0.80”) width of broad crescent form. The front bordered with exaggerated hound’s tooth motif to the field. The reverse with unidentified relief motif, perhaps mystical. Pierced for suspension, original to it as the border runs around the hole. Original suspension ring. As expert navigators, celestial bodies provided guidance and took on supernatural identities. This amulet was intended to invoke the help of and praise the glory of the solar system, represented by one of its most prominent and influential bodies.
