Standard 1840 pattern as carried by Union Sergents before and during the Civil War. This example marked only U above J which weakly struck US and JS for Joseph Stillman, inspector, 1831-50. Thus, the sword was in service at the outbreak of the war and probably served the entire duration.  Hilt good dark patina and no defects. Blade with smooth gray patina. See The American Sword, Peterson, #10 for this pattern and further details.
