See The American Sword, Peterson #73. Brass hilt with good high relief, well chased foliage decoration. The guard is pierced in floral motif, with remnants of gold overlay. The pommel is engraved with the officer’s initials. Wire wrapped black leather grip, excellent. 32” broad and narrow fullered curved s.e. blade of fine fighting form. The ricasso with Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass mark to the left and dated 1860 to the right. Blade shows dark patina with some isolated pitting toward the point. The edge with shallow nicks. Iconic with the Ames name, 1860 date and officer’s monogram.
