14” length. Made from the trunk and root cluster of a small tree. the two main roots shaped as claws and the area behind carved to simulate animal hair. These were made by the Pananwahskek of Maine and Quebec. While some were sold to visitors, this example, probably was used for ritual ceremonies and shows great age and considerable use. This example is from an heirloom collection including a wood box pencil dated 1904 about the time which the club was purchased, however it evidently experienced a generation of use at that time, dating it to the late 19th century.
