Type known as a swigler. See Collector’s Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, p.62 #18, left. 5 7/8” length, ingeniously made from a single piece, skillfully lathe turned with the heads, each branded with the owner’s initials, inset. Cork stopped hole in the middle which actually is quite convenient for drinking. The body with remnants of red lead paint and the cork original to its time of use. The construction initially baffled us as the heads are seated from the inside. In fact, it is of slightly oval section, out of round by about 1/8” which allowed the heads to be slipped in and seated in a slight notch. One head with a slit filled with a wood splinter.  Wonderful age character
