Early 18th century through the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Iron head with circular poll, flattened to grip the haft. Short backswept bit. See I, Neumann, 17.A. 22 ½” length with an original working life haft rasp finished from a hard wood limb with the bark partially left on. While it is impossible to claim that a haft is the first and only, this one clearly dates to the period of the head and is original to its use. In this size, these axes were both tool and weapon. This one may have seen service in the French and Indian War as well. Wonderful age character.
