The case similar to Neumann 34.K, dated 1775, with Barlow reinforced pivot and double side scales, now perished. The 3 1/4" wedge section blade with maker's mark at the forte, of spatulate form with complete half round tip. As crews were often comprised of shanghaied or impressed sailors, it was customary to blunt the knives which they used in performing their duties, Usually the tips were broken off. This example is purpose made for use by such a sailor. Sound excavated condition with the blade moveable.
