1840 pattern, Peterson #44. Rare example by Horstman’s Phil. and so marked at the blade forte. Reverse with keystone mark. The hilt with considerable spotty heavy gold plate, original to it and perhaps standard for Horstman examples which are quite rare. The blade with very minor storage surface oxidation over original bright blue. Exceptional for condition as well as its rare origin. Probably made for a state militia C.1840s and surely served in the Civil War where musicians marched with the front ranks of the infantry with only these swords for defense.
