19th century. Probably sacrificial and used in worship of Yemoja. Finely forged blade with figural forte and divided tip producing a flattened scroll terminal above a curved tip with double stepped back. Both sides with a finely chiseled matrix band. Shaped hilt with reeded grip. The blade heavily rusted as found with herbalists staffs (osanyin) in contrast with the hilt which is quite well preserved. Obviously, the blade only was subject to water or more likely, chemicals (“medicine”) and the hilt spared in the ritual. Only example we have encountered and of great age.
