Early 19th century. 49 ¾” length. Broad angled triangular form blade with the sharpened front edge, stamped with an indecipherable makers mark. Wrought iron with distinct lamination showing. The conical socket with fine forge-welded seam. Original haft made from a straight hardwood limb with the bark on. The socket lined with sail canvass and presumably pitch, seating the haft securely. Wonderful age character with considerable evidence of use and untouched throughout.
