C.1870-80s. Classic as evolved with the western expansion following the Civil War. Served on the plains where buffalo hunters harvested millions of animals for their hide, bones and meat to feed the cavalry and railroad construction crews. Produced in New England where numerous small factories met the demand without marking their products as did Russell, the best known producer. Three piece, with fine steel 5 1/4” clipped point blade, skillfully sharpened as replacements were rarely available on the frontier. Wood scale grips secured with six rivets, textured from age. Wonderful age character.
