Forged iron 20 1/4” height (straight measure) with curved wedge section blade and tapered tang ending in an angled tip which would have secured it to a wood grip and indicating its full length. Very well forged throughout with the point swelled to near cylindrical form. If finished out in the tapered wedge section, it would have resulted in a very thin segment backed by the considerable mass of the rest of the tool which would not survive in the field. As well, a sharp point is not needed as it is not intended to penetrate. Made by the same smiths who produced Viking swords, this would have been of significant value and its loss, hard felt.
