Circular bronze, 7/8” diameter of eight circles connected by annular bars. Professionally conserved and the gold surface restored. On a modern black neck cord with gilt closure. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. The raised circles would have afforded an additional measure of protection as they could engage a blade and keep it from slipping on to an unprotected area. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior.
