C.850-1066 AD. York, England. Large example. 10" length with tapered bar and integral forged iron housing with side key opening which received the spring secured locking bar. A purposed made tool (key) was needed to compress the spring within and unlock the two bars. Rusted overall from burial but complete. The separate locking bar intact and slides but is locked. The large span suggests its use on the door of a building of substantial size.
