VIKING HEART PENDANT NECKLACE, C.950-1050 AD

Exceptional example with roped border. The helix or spiral was a favorite Viking form, probably with spiritual significance.  The field with a trefoil, another Viking favorite, in unusually elaborate detail.  About 7/8” width (0.92”). Substantial with high relief decoration, produced by the open face mold technique. The heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the Viking warrior. It is abundantly referenced in Viking literature. Surface textured from burial. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored on a gilt Sterling silver 18” neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
