South Indian, 16th-early 17th century. Iron, 18" total length. The hilt of skillfully shaped elements. The side straps tapered from the middle with ball terminals to the back. Both with line engraved decoration. Double grips with large medial balls. Recurved ridged guard with animal head terminal. Broad blade with nesting reeded chevrons laminated in base mounts. Well-worn with isolated pitting as typically encountered for these rare early examples.
