Probably militia. Brass or bronze hilt decorated in particularly high relief with foliage, spread winged eagle and shield to the pommel, scalloped guard with fine eagle, shield and motto. The quillon block with canted stars & bars divided by a band (perhaps laurel), symbolizing the national divide. Wire wrapped leather covered grip. 30" d.e. blade well etched in patriotic motifs including an American flag with exaggerated long trailing end. Makers name Pettibone, Cincinnati (recorded mid 19th century on") to the forte. Plated scabbard with matching mounts, excellent, with slightest freckling. Blade etching crisp, some smooth gray surface color to the balance. Hilt excellent for the period.
