Unusual variation of this group generalized by Peterson #115 and carried by both sides before the Civil War when the armed services of the US consisted primarily of state militias. Brass hilt with "bow tie" form cross guard and reeded bone grip (one small chip and good patina). The plumed helmet form pommel unusually depiction a helmet with realistic bared face cover in the 16th century style. Invariably, these are based on the cuirassier's helmets of the Napoleonic period with pointed visors and often a brim. 27" d.e. blade, unmarked. iron scabbard with mounts matching the hilt. Uniform good expected patina throughout. Surely served in the Civil War with good likelihood of Southern service.
