See Peterson #11. Brass hilt with helmeted pommel and reeded bone grip. 25 1/4” broad d.e. fighting blade, bright with minor pitting speckles and good polish. Carried by sergeants who led in battle. At the onset of the Civil War, the US standing Army comprised 16,000 men only. A defense force of 75,000 was created by calling up the militias. It was the militias which formed the Northern defense and response to the Southern attack. This sword dates among the earliest of these and surely saw service in the Civil War.
