Peterson #86. Custer era and showing distinctive Western Frontier character. 32 1/4" blade with C LOMBARDI & CO NEW YORK retailer’s name, unusually well struck as this is a retailer’s name applied after the sword was assembled. C Lombardi is recorded as working 1870-75 only, making this a very early example of the pattern during the Westward expansion following the Civil War.  Brass hilt with three bar guard and wire-wrapped leather covered grip. The wire double twist, a bit of flare as seen with cavalry officers, particularly Custer, of the period. Scabbard undented and retaining nearly all its plating. Blade with wear to the plating at the ricasso and point, both with brown oxidation. Early datable Custer era example with great age appearance exuding Western/cowboy character.
