26 1/2” blade marked POLLARD & ALFORD, BOSTON recorded in 1879 and probably earlier as supplier of “combat swords.” Hilt of 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s form with GAR logo in place of the eagle on the guard. Founded in 1866 for Union veterans and disbanded after the death of its last member, the GAR was an inspiration for the fraternal organizations and secret societies which evolved in the decades following the war. Original scabbard, the leather worn, and shoulder belt.
