19th century. Cylindrical dense black wood (ebony?), 37 7/8 length. Steel tooled, but carved and scraped in the pre contact fashion. The grip with elongated stylized figure of a crocodile flanked by panels of stylized geometry in two ranks of vertical bands. Deep relief carving, originally lime inlaid. The surface with medium encrustation, some wear from use and substantial age character. Early example very seldom encountered on todays market.
