Iron, fluted in the "maximilian" style. 7 3/4" width of flared form with curved cusped edges around the ears and cusped bottom. The top with a pair of swiveling hinges to engage the face plate. The center pierced with four holes for a mount to accommodate a crest, and indicating a noble owner, surely a knight. Minor staining and short crack with contemporary reinforcement plate behind. Excellent preservation. Any element of horse armor is considered very rare. A major element of this early date is exceptional.
