The shoulders expanded to create an indentation around the neck to which cloth streamers and cord were tied as sacrifices to bind agreements and secure divine guidance. Good medium dark patina. Late 19th century, when Tanzania was the Eastern portal for the slave trade with the Arab world where a blend of Islam and traditional religion was practiced. Oaths bound by this figure would have included slaver transactions.
