19th century, the period of the great slaver Tippu Tip, centered in Zanzibar, who controlled the entire east and central African slave trade, marketing to the Arab nations. It is estimated that many major regions were depleted by 2/3 of their population as a result. This axe is 21 5/8” in length with figurally carved terminal to the hatched panel decorated haft. The Iron blade is tapered and curved providing a back hook and bears an old collection number in museum notation. Purchased at Christie's, London, about 1990 and possibly ex: Rene Lavigne collection.
