Anglo-Sudanese war period. Produced in Birmingham England for the Egyptian Army. 19” height of large butted link mail. Complete and undamaged with stable brown patina. At the time, Egypt was controlled by England who had guaranteed its national debt in order to construct the Suez Canal. The Mad Mahdi rose the Dervish to drive all non-Muslims out of Sudan by jihad. The Egyptian army attempted to vacate its outposts in Sudan, but war broke out. These mail armors were produced for the Egyptians but captured and used by the followers of the Mahdi.
