Among the most interesting swords used in North America are the Spanish Colonial short swords used throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and the American southwest. Many, like this example, are entirely made in the New World and exhibit a unique combination of craftsmanship and artistry. The heavy 21 1/8" blade is slightly curved and suitable for close in fighting as on shipboard. The iron guard is heavy yet elegant with a monster head terminal to the knuckle bow. The grip is of iron plated horn scales. Most finished their lives as farm tools and show the effects of abuse. This example is in exceptional preservation with a fine patina throughout.
