Scottish Rebellion period C.1715. Classic hilt of the 1700-25 period, distinguished by its smooth oval form and according in detail with #27 of Scottish Swords and Dirks, Wallace. The panels decorated with pierced key slot/spade motifs and circles as well as hound's tooth, stipple and plain bands. The 33 3/4" double edged blade is decorated with rows of star shaped punches and a mark at the forte. The broad rolled forward quillon is intact. The decoration of the hilt is inspired by the work of Walter Allan of Sterling.
