Romans were fastidious about hygiene (NB the baths) and removal of all body hair was part of the grooming process. These silver tweezers, 2 ¾” long, were used for that purpose and the use of silver suggests ownership by a person of significant import. A recent exhibition at Wroxeter in Shropshire, England features over 50 pairs of such tweezers along with other artifacts. A CNN article on the exhibition, illustrating tweezers such as this and their use, is available at The article neither shows nor mentions silver examples, only bronze, attesting to the rarity of this pair.
